EXPERIENCE

F.L. SCHLAGLE HIGH SCHOOL

Since August 2020, I have worked as a Para for English Language Learners at F.L. Schlagle High School in Kansas City, KS. While there, I have supported E.L. students in their mainstream classes and designed additional support materials for students. I also coached the school's Scholars Bowl Team for the 2020-21 season. Classes were online from August 2020-March 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but then we have resumed in-person classes.

AMBIDEXTROUS BLOODHOUND PRESS

Since March 2021, I have volunteered as an editorial assistant for Ambidextrous Bloodhound Press, a group that publishes a number of (primarily online) literary journals/websites. My duties there consist of voting on poems for our One Sentence Poems site and creating the posts on WordPress.

KITTY CITY KANSAS

Since October 2020, I have volunteered as an adoption counselor at Kitty City Kansas, a cat shelter in Lenexa, KS. As an adoption counselor, I speak with adopters about the ins and outs of caring for their new cats. I also help with duties around the shelter, such as feeding the cats and cleaning their cages.

K-STATE INTERNATIONAL STUDENT CENTER

From January 2019 to May 2020, I worked as a Student Assistant at K-State's International Student and Scholar Services Center. While there, I helped file paperwork, answer the phone, greet students, send emails, and work on other projects. I really enjoyed getting to work with students from such diverse cultural backgrounds, and I also gained experience working in an office environment.

BROWN V. BOARD LINGUISTICS RESEARCH

During the spring 2020 semester, I did linguistics research with Dr. Mary Kohn on two interviews from the Brown v. Board of Education Oral History Collection. I first transcribed the interviews in PRAAT. I then analyzed their /ay/ tokens to see how monophthongal or diphthongal they were in order to look at patterns in African American Language (AAL) in Topeka prior to the Great Migration. This project allowed me to learn more about research practices, AAL, Kansas history, and working with PRAAT. My final project can be found here.

MISSOURI STATE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

During the summer of 2019, I interned at the Missouri State Historical Society - Kansas City Research Center. While there, I created finding aids, reorganized collections, and did preliminary inventories for new additions. I realized that I really enjoy archival work and was able to gain some initial experience in the nonprofit sector.

LINGUISTIC ANTHROPOLOGY FIELD SCHOOL

During the summer of 2019, I participated in a four week linguistic anthropology field school helping to contribute to a dictionary for the Kiowa language. We first spent two weeks in class learning about the Kiowa history and language, along with language preservation. We then spent one week in Oklahoma interviewing Kiowa elders and one final week working with our sound recordings. This was my first experience doing linguistic research, and it was both incredibly informative and very fun. It was also just so lovely and such an honor to be able to talk to the elders that we interviewed.

INTERNATIONAL SERVICE TEAMS

During the summer of 2018, I spent five weeks in Kamba Kua, Paraguay teaching English as a Second Language at an elementary school with two other K-State students. We took a semester-long class on international service to prepare us before we left, and once there, we were planning our own lessons and teaching full-time. This was my first experience teaching ESL, and I realized while there that I very much enjoy teaching. I also gained wonderful experience practicing Spanish in an immersion setting (with our students and other teachers, with our host family, etc.) and spending time in a culture different from my own.

RESIDENTIAL LEARNING ASSISTANT

During the 2017-2018 school year, I served as the Residential Learning Assistant for the Global Village Cat Community. For this, I had a community of nine students who were all in Modern Language and geography classes together and almost all of whom lived near each other in my residence hall. During the fall, I helped to teach a class for them on cultural competency, and I also planned various events for them throughout the year. From this job, I gained lovely experience in teaching, cultural competency, and event planning.

INTERMEDIATE SPANISH IN COSTA RICA

In January of 2017, I went on a two week-long faculty-led trip to Costa Rica. While there, we lived with host families, painted murals at a local elementary school, took Spanish classes, worked on research papers (mine was about Costa Rican sayings), and went on cultural excursions. This was my first opportunity to practice Spanish in an immersion setting, and I also gained experience living in a culture different from my own.
