SIGMA TAU DELTA

Sigma Tau Delta is an International English Honor Society "dedicated to fostering literacy and all aspects of the discipline of English." I was initiated into the K-State chapter, Alpha Theta Eta, in Fall 2018. I served as the Associate Student Representative for High Plains Region from March 2019 to May 2020 and as the vice president of my chapter from August 2019 to May 2020. I presented original work at the International Convention in March 2019 and the High Plains Regional Conference in October 2019. Through my leadership roles within the organization, I gained experience in social media and event planning.

SIGMA DELTA PI

Sigma Delta Pi is a National Spanish Honor Society which aims to promote scholarship regarding the Spanish language and the literature and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. I was initiated into the K-State chapter, Epsilon Xi, in Spring 2018 and served as the chapter vice president from April 2019 to May 2020. Our chapter plans and hosts a number of events each semester, including a poetry contest and celebrations for holidays from within the Spanish-speaking world. Through my time with this organization, I have gained experience in event planning and fundraising.

STUDENTS FOR ENVIRONMENTAL ACTION

Students for Environmental is a K-State student group dedicated to increasing awareness of and action for environmental issues at K-State, in Manhattan, and beyond. The group plans events such as trash clean-ups, energy audits, and presentations by environmental speakers throughout the year, with a big celebration for Earth Day each spring. I joined in fall 2016 and served as the group's secretary in spring 2018 as and the president for the 2018-2019 school year. Through these leadership roles, I gained experience in note-taking, communication, coordinating between groups and individuals, event planning, advertising, fundraising, and volunteer management.

K-STATE SPANISH CLUB

The K-State Spanish Club is a student group which hosts events focusing on the cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. They generally do a Día de los Muertos event every fall, along with other events. I joined this group in Fall 2016 and became a social chair in Fall 2017. I then transitioned to being the vice president in Fall 2018 and the president in Fall 2019. Through my time with this group, I gained experience in planning and promoting events and coordinating between different student groups.

INTERNATIONAL BUDDIES

International Buddies is an organization that matches local and international students in buddy groups and then plans events for them to attend each semester, such as game nights and events focusing on American cultural events (Thanksgiving, etc.). I joined this organization in Fall 2016 and became the group's secretary in Fall 2019. Through leadership position with this group, I gained experience in note-taking, communication, event planning, fundraising, and working with culturally diverse populations.

MODERN LANGUAGES AMBASSADORS

The K-State Modern Languages Ambassadors promote the K-State Modern Languages Program at K-State events, such as the Majors, Minors, and More fair. They also give presentations to high school and other students about studying modern languages at K-State and in general. I served as a Modern Languages Ambassador from Fall 2018 to Spring 2020. Through this role, I gained experience in promoting a program and giving presentations.

K-STATE BOOK NETWORK

The K-State Book Network is a committee of K-State staff, faculty, and students who choose the Common Read book for the incoming freshmen each year. I joined this committee in Fall 2017. Each year, people submit potential books based on the year's theme, and the committee members then read samples of the books and meet to discuss them, taking surveys after the meetings to eventually narrow the list down to our three top choices, which are presented to the provost. Through my time with this group, I gained experience in giving feedback in a committee setting.

KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY HONORS PROGRAM

The Kansas State University Honors Program "encourages students to grow in the intellectual craft of scholarship and to reach their full potential as scholarly, competent and fulfilled leaders."  As a member of the Honors Program, I took honors courses and completed co-curricular experiences, such as an internship and a study abroad trip, for honors credit. I also completed an honors project doing linguistic research on Brown v. Board interviews, which can be seen under "Experience."

PHI BETA KAPPA

Phi Beta Kappa is a National Liberal Arts and Sciences Honor Society which "celebrates excellence in the liberal arts and sciences and champions freedom of thought." I was initiated into the Beta of Kansas chapter at K-State in Spring 2018.

PHI KAPPA PHI

Phi Kappa Phi is a National Honor Society which "recognizes and promotes academic excellence in all fields of higher education and engages the community of scholars in service to others." I was initiated into the K-State chapter in Spring 2018.

FRIENDS OF FOUR PAWS

Friends of Four Paws was a K-State student group that worked with local animal shelters, helping to fundraise for them and sending volunteers to their events. I joined the group in Fall 2016 and became the secretary in Fall 2017. Due to low membership, the group unfortunately had to disband at the end of the Fall 2017 semester. Through my leadership role with this organization, I gained experience in note-taking and communication.

K-STATE SPEECH TEAM

The K-State Speech Team is a group of students who compete in intercollegiate public speaking competitions. I was a member of this team during the 2016-2017 school year, and my events were Persuasive Speaking, Prose, and Informative Speaking. I left this group after the 2016-2017 school year because, as much as I enjoyed being on the team, my level of interest in the activity did not correspond to the necessary time commitment. From my time with this group, I gained experience in speech writing, critiquing my teammates' speeches, and public speaking.

FOOD PANTRY VOLUNTEERING

Over the past few years, a friend of mine has organized several trips to volunteer at Harvester's Community Food Network, and I have personally attended the majority of these. At these events, we generally are given a tour of the facilities and then work packaging food. Through my leadership classes, I have also volunteered with The Breadbasket and Food Recovery Network, food distribution organizations in Manhattan. From these experiences, I have gained knowledge about how food pantries, as one type of nonprofits, run their operations and organize their volunteers.
